Opening: Weaving and Fiber Arts Instructor

To adults who are blind  


Schedule: This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm but part-time (20 hours) candidates will be considered.


Description: The Fiber Arts Instructor provides a wide range of instructional activities related to teaching weaving and other fiber arts to adults who are blind. The agency’s Weaving Studio has 25+ looms and serves weavers from our residential program, which provides a home to 85 residents who are blind.


Compensation: $19 – $20 per hour plus excellent benefits, including heavily subsidized health insurance; 20 paid days off and 6 paid holidays annually to new full-time employees; 401k retirement contributions (after 2 years); educational and licensure reimbursement; discounts on products and services; subsidy for gym membership, flexible spending account, discounted meals, etc. and a friendly and casual work atmosphere


Main Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Skilled weaver & capable sewer
  • 3-years’ experience teaching weaving and 1-year teaching (any content), preferred
  • 1-year experience with people with disabilities, preferred
  • Experience with website management and/or online sales, preferred.

Located on the northwest side of Chicago, Friedman Place is a nonprofit residential community that serves adults aged 22 and up who are blind. Each resident lives in their own apartment – there are 81 in the building. The building is specially designed for people who are blind so residents may move about safely and freely while at home. Staff, specially trained to work with adults who are blind, provide a wide range of services designed so residents lead as full and as independent lives as possible.
