Friedman Place is a great place to volunteer! Each year we are lucky to host volunteers, both groups and individuals, from around the Chicago area. Over the last few months of 2016, Friedman Place welcomed a few volunteer groups, including some that were new to us. Volunteer groups come to us from local organizations such as our local Parish – St. Hilary’s and its Girl Scout Troop, or a local company/corporation.
This past Fall, we hosted groups of corporate volunteers from Astellas and JP Morgan Chase. We are grateful to these businesses which see corporate volunteer projects as a way for the company to ‘give back’ to the community, while also building a team among their employees. Corporate volunteer groups sometimes provide extras during their visit, such as pizzas and bingo prizes. Our group volunteer experiences include an educational session, which gives the visiting group information about blindness and tips for working with Residents.
In September, a group of volunteers from Astellas, a pharmaceutical company based in Deerfield, joined us. Astellas sent 20 employees to join residents for a fun afternoon of pizza, bingo, music and lots of laughs. Everyone had a great time and Astellas made a generous donation at the end of the day.
December brought a wave of volunteer activity around the holidays! We welcomed another corporate group – this time 12 employees from JP Morgan Chase joined us, for an afternoon of holiday Bingo fun with Residents. St. Hilary’s Parish and their Girl Scouts have been throwing a Christmas party for Residents for years. The 2016 St. Hilary’s Christmas Party featured Christmas carolers, snacks and a gift for every Resident!
